over-exposure to awesomeness: the greatest kid's film of all time
When I was growing up I hated all of the films on offer; Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks seemed to on every weekend and were far from entertaining. With animation, everything except the Jungle Book was aimed at little girls, and even though The Land Before Time still makes me cry a little bit, now that we have in our midst The Land Before Time 6, it has neutered its own appeal. It wasn't until I was 16 that I fell in love with a kids' film, and that was due to a quite fantastical experience involving Toy Story, a cinema, and a Pot Noodle with some special mushrooms in it. Enough said. After that a fortnight in Saudi Arabia with just a copy of the Lion King cemented a deeply hidden Disney mentality. In 2003 my daughter was born, and even though she didn't understand words, pictures or anything else other than eating and pooing, I took advantage of the opportunity to buy every Disney film I could get my hands on, and everything else besides...and here I became a connoisseur, and so would like to share with you the absolute truth, unvarnished and undeniable!
The greatest kids' flick of all time is Kung Fu Panda. Full stop. No Comebacksies.
All sorts of films litter my (daughters) collection now, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Scooby Doo, Meet The Robinsons to Toy Story, which has never ever been as good as that first time, but nothing comes close to Po. From start to finish KFP is entertaining, funny, character-driven and perfectly cast. Jack Black is almost visible behind the pixels. The story is continuously moving forward, and the viewer falls in love with Po without the usual 15 minute 'fall-in-love-with-the-hero' segment at the beginning. Even if you never see the film, every human being should witness the brilliant 'Dumpling Fight' sequence around the hour mark, just to see the full extent of Dreamworks' power. A must-see for all adults and children, even without a Pot Noodle, though you may crave them by the end.Of course, there is one flaw to this sermon, and it is a sermon...the kid disagrees! She wants Cinderella on all the time, or Aladdin or anything with a princess, which KFP does not have. No love interest, another bonus methinks. So, the greatest kids' film of all time (for adults) is Kung Fu Panda. Kaboosh!
